Creating A More Fashion Forward New York

One 83

If the hustle and bustle of New York leaves you feeling frazzled and you tire of the typical restaurant scene, then it’s time to experience something different at One 83. Founded by the masterminds who revived Delmonico’s for the New York scene, One 83 is a lovely get away for those craving a taste of Northern Italy in their own backyard. One 83 boasts an excellent menu crafted from the freshest ingredients, a lovely year round garden patio, and an added bonus for the ladies: lovely waiters with swoon worthy Italian accents!

Located on the Upper East Side, One 83 is open seven days a week for dinner guests. The interior is decorated to evoke the maximum emotions of warmth and hospitality. One 83 strikes the perfect balance between warm color tones and muted lighting to offer a relaxing setting that almost makes you forget that you’re in Manhattan. In addition, their musical choices are appealing for any crowd with a current selection to appeal to younger patrons while the melodies are ambient enough to blend into the background. Once seated, patrons will then be treated to an ultimate selection of tempting dishes. With One 83's menu, there is truly something here that everyone can enjoy. A meal at One 83 is one that involves all of your taste buds through out each course. Our meal began with a lovely sampling of Bruschetta and their house Focaccia bread sticks. After this, appetizers were served. We sampled between the Asparago (asparagus served fresh with a light vinegrette) and the Insalata di Spinacci (spinach salad served in a light olive oil and served with red onions, mushrooms and Italian pancetta). Both of these dishes are perfect examples for the level of ingredients used in everything at One 83. Each ingredient was able to stand out with it’s own flavor while creating a melody of flavors with the other ingredients. For our main course we had Tonno alla Arrabiata (sautéed yellow fin tuna with artichokes and red onions in Chianti wine sauce) and Filetto Di Sogliola Adriatico (filet of sole sautéed with lemon, capers and white wine and served with polenta). Both again were light dishes that complimented the natural flavors of the fish we picked. Although we chose to stay within the seafood portion of the menu, One 83 does offer a large variety of dishes for those who prefer meat or vegetarian dishes. Of course, at a restaurant like One 83, it’s best to save room for dessert, and I’m glad I did. A meal is not complete here until you’ve at least tried their Chocolate Soufflé Cake! With a warm center and a side of all natural fresh vanilla ice cream, once I picked up my fork I didn’t stop until the soufflé and the ice cream were gone! Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just want to try out the fare at a new restaurant, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be one of the happy patrons raving about One 83. Nestled on the corner of 83rd Street and 1st Avenue, One 83 can become your retreat from the cacophony on the New York City streets. Visit them on the web at www.one83restaurant.com or call for more information.

Seo Restaurant

If you’re in the mood for cuisine from the far East, then Seo is a perfect place to sample a flavor of Japan, in the heart of New York. Located in the upscale neighborhood of Turtle Bay at 249 East 49th St, Seo offers an intimate setting that overlooks a beautiful Japanese garden creating a perfect balance between nature and tastes.

After successfully creating a name in America as a chef at Tribeca’s Obecca Li, Chef Seo decided to create an authentic Japanese restaurant that would highlight his extensive 27 year experience working in many of Tokyo’s finest restaurants. Seo has won multiple awards for it’s food including the National Culinary Excellence Medallion in 2002 and the North American Restaurant Association Award in 2004 and 2005.

Upon entering Seo, the careful attention to detail is instantly obvious. There is an option in seating between the sushi bar or a view of the garden by sitting at the tables in the rear of the restaurant. The clean and simple atmosphere helps to highlight the attention to the menu, which changes with the seasons. Seo also boasts an extensive sake list that includes 30 varieties, each picked to compliment a particular meal. We were treated to Oyama Sake straight and as a Saketini. It’s sweet smooth flavor was a welcome change to the usual martini or my personal favorite, the cosmopolitan.

Dinner began with an appetizer sampler which highlighted many traditional Japanese dishes as well of some of Seo’s well known dishes. The appetizers included Sesame Tofu, Squid Salad, Small Fish and Shrimp which actually had the fish stuffed in the shrimp, Fish in Miso, Barbequed Eel, and a vegetable dish of Pumpkin and Japanese Eggplant. The seafood was very fresh and each sampler was a combination of flavors and textures.

After our appetizers, we were treated to a variety of entrees. We were offered a Sushi Sampler which included maccaral, hamachi, salmon, toru (fatty tuna), tuna and bing jo tuna, Assorted Tempura with White Rice which included shrimp, Japanese eggplant and pumpkin, and Grilled Free Range Chicken with Seasoned Rice and pickled plum crab dumplings.

Even though we were completely stuffed from our dinner, we of course had plenty of room for dessert. Although, it should be noted that, traditionally, Japanese dinner ends with a bowl of Inaniwa or fine and delicate Japanese Udon noodles. Before desserts were served, we were offered cups of Green Tea and Brown Tea. Our desserts consisted of Fruit of the Day, Cream Anmitsu or assorted Japanese ice creams with Jelly and Red Bean sauce topped with whipped cream and Japanese Pear and Banana with Sweet Sesame Sauce and Chestnuts which was very similar to a banana split sans ice cream.

The desserts were a perfect end to a meal that can be considered light and filling at the same time. Seo is an excellent restaurant for a multitude of occasions. Whether you’re going out on a first date, meeting with long time friends, or enjoying a meal with your family, Seo is sure to satisfy any craving that your party might have. With reasonable prices and mouth watering dishes, Seo just might become your new favorite authentic Japanese spot in the city.

Brunelli Sorriso Trattoria

Looking for Italian but want it with an American twist? Then try Brunelli Sorriso Trattoria, located at 1409 York Avenue on the corner of York and 75 Street. Brunelli is an American Italian restaurant that focuses on quality service and a familial atmosphere that will make it one of your favorite eateries in the city.

Founded by Russ Brunelli and his cousin Ignazio Leone (who is also the head chef), this restaurant has been in operation for eight years and includes a wealth of history. The chef, Ignazio, is literally self taught in his culinary skills. Almost every dish offered on Brunelli’s menu was handed down by Ignazio’s mother and grandmother.

And if that isn’t enough to tease your senses, the actual meaning of the restaurant’s name, Brunelli Sorriso Trattoria, is Italian for “Brunelli brings a smile to your face”. This isn’t just a saying, it’s the truth! Beyond the menu, at Brunelli every Wednesday is party night with a jazz trio and vocalist starting at 9pm with no cover or minimum required.

While at Brunelli I sampled a wide variety of items from their menu. Dinner began with a sample of their most famous appetizers the Stuffed Artichokes and the Polenta Gorgonzola and Sweet Sausage which were a complex combination of flavors and textures. Appetizers were followed by two types of Bruschetta; the Four Cheese and the Sage Roasted Tomato, Truffle Oil and Parmesan bruschetta.

After we teased our taste buds with the appetizers and bruschetta, our entrees were served which included Petti de Pollo Alla Salvia which was a tasty dish of chicken breast sautéed in a lemon sauce and Veal Pizzaiolla which consisted of veal medallions sautéed with garlic and olive oil. Both entrees were a testament to the fresh vegetables, poultry and meats that Brunelli uses to prepare their menu.

And just incase we felt that our appetites hadn’t been indulged enough, dessert consisted of a serving of Chocolate Lasagna and a plate of Cheese and Fruit. The chocolate lasagna was amazing, this rich dessert consists of multiple layers of chocolate intermixed with whipped cream and raspberry sauce. However, all the chocolate and rich filling doesn’t leave you feeling like you’ve eaten a heavy dessert. In reality, it’s very light and was the perfect end to a perfect dinner.

Brunelli Sorriso Trattoria is definitely a restaurant that you can make your favorite place just to spend time with great company or to see and be seen. They boast a clientele that includes such famed names like Derek Jeter, Rudy Gulliani, Chuck Zito (HBO’s “Oz”), Regis Philbin, members from the Sex & the City cast, and members from The Sopranos cast. Brunelli is a great place to star gaze without the pretentious atmosphere of many celebrity hot spots!

Although Brunelli does not at this time offer a price fixed menu, this shouldn’t prevent you from tasting their fare since their lunch and dinner prices are very reasonable. Their well lit atmosphere and plentiful windows makes the attraction to this local eatery quickly understandable. So what are you waiting for?! Reserve a table for your friends or special someone today and you just might find yourself dining next to one of your favorite celebrities!

For more information about Brunelli Sorriso Trattoria visit them at 1409 York Avenue on the corner of York and 75th St.

Meli Melo

If you savor the exotic flavor of fine fare from France infused with Mediterranean, Italian and Vietnamese flavors, then you should definitely reserve a table at Meli Melo, aptly named in Latin for a blend of flavor and cuisine. Owned and created by world renowned chef Bernard Ros, this restaurant is nestled in the now famous Murray Hill section of Madison Avenue between 28th and 29th streets. Known as the unofficial mayor of the New York French scene, Bernard Ros has decided to bring the flavor of France to New York, with a twist.

After years of creating successful restaurants around the world and in New York City, Bernard Ros decided to invent an eatery that didn’t solely cater to one type of cuisine. This cultural blend is not only evident in the cuisine but in the atmosphere. Meli Melo is reminiscent of a typical French café with an intimate setting highlighted by rich woodwork and a beautiful full length mural that represents a blending of cultures. Whereas the rest of New York is a blur of activity, Meli Melo makes time stand still as you only want to savor your meal and company.

The atmosphere only helped to increase my dinner party’s anticipation of the meal we had ordered. Every patron’s meal begins with a Gorgonzola with Sun Dried Tomato Reduction which is served in a pastry puff and has a light and flaky consistency paralleled against the tangy flavors of the gorgonzola and tomatoes. Our appetizers included Tomato, Fresh Mozzarella and Basil, Smoked Malourd Duck with Root Vegetables and Calamari Stuffed with Shrimp & Crab on Tomato Sambai, each served with a portion of Foie Gras. All of this was proof that Meli Melo not only caters to those who prefer traditional fare such as the tomato and mozzarella, but to those who prefer exotic tastes as well.

Between our appetizers and the main course, we were treated to a sample of the Lobster Ravioli in a Rich Tomato Sauce, which was absolutely amazing. For the main course, we dined on Lamb Tagine with Desert Spices and Mediterranean Vegetables, Organic Chicken Breast Filled with Proscuitto and Fresh Mozzarella and Atlantic Salmon Steak Coated with Lemon Rind. Everything was beyond compare with freshly prepared vegetables, meats and seafood. The seafood was fresh, the meats tender and the vegetables expertly seasoned.

After an excellent meal, dessert consisted of a plate of Fruit and Cheese and of course, being a chocolate lover, I couldn’t resist their signature dessert Chocolate Temptation, which is made personally by Chef Bernard Ros. And just incase you might have a little room left over, each meal is complimented with a salver of Petit Fours. Needless to say, I was completely stuffed and couldn’t possibly think of eating another thing!

So, how can you add your name to the list of patrons who sing the praise of Meli Melo? Well, Meli Melo is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday from 11:30am to 11:30pm with only dinner being served on the weekends from 5pm to 12am. If it’s price fixed meals that you seek, Meli Melo offers two options for your culinary pleasure.

A complete lunch includes an appetizer, entree, dessert and coffee or tea. If you would rather dine at night, a complete dinner includes an appetizer, soup or salad, entree, dessert, petit fours and coffee or tea. Both complete meals are offered at low prices, which affords you the opportunity to sample from Meli Melo’s wine and top shelf spirits. So, if you can’t spoil your sweetie and escape to a romantic back drop like France, don’t fret! Take your honey to Meli Melo and let the intimate setting and rich cuisine whisk you away to France…if only for one night!

With the season turning from Summer to Fall, fashionable and sophisticated New Yorker’s know that it’s time to expand our dining experiences to include a new brand of American cuisine that not only incorporates other cooking styles but manages to surprise and entice our senses. All of this can be found at Wildflower, a young and fresh restaurant located in the village on Bleecker St. Wildflower caters to the patron who likes to experience new flavors but also enjoys the familiarity essential for core American dishes.

Like it’s name, Wildflower embellishes on items regularly found on most restaurants’ menus, but makes it their own by creating new flavors and textures not normally associated with those foods. Wildflower boasts a menu that caters to every desire with a full array of seafood, meats, pastas and vegetarian items. Almost every dish on their menu compliments a sweet flavor with a traditional dinner item such as salmon or lamb chops.

Wildflower is relatively new to the New York restaurant scene, appearing in October of 2004. Yet, they have a strong understanding of a diner’s psyche. Almost every month, Wildflower is offering a tasting of either exotic menu items or unusual selections of common items. This month, adventurous diners can experience a five course mushroom and wine tasting on the 29th of September. For a full listing of events, visit Wildflower’s website at http://www.wildflowereclecticamerican.com. In addition, Wildflower offers live music on Tuesdays and Thursdays and occasionally on Fridays.

Those who are familiar with the village will enjoy Wildflower for it’s cozy atmosphere, which is like a vacation away from the usual lack luster décor of typical village restaurants. The walls are painted a warm, soft yellow with leaf stencils. Bookcases decorated with a smattering of books line the wallls, and all diners have a first hand view of the kitchen. And as If the atmosphere isn’t enough to relax their patrons, Wildflower has the friendliest and most knowledgeable waiters. Not only do they treat each table of guests as if they were personally invited, but they suggest dishes from the menu that create a complete meal for the senses.

While at Wildflower, we sampled a vast array of their seafood menu. Dinner began with a glass of wine from their extensive wine cellar, which can be bought by the glass or by the bottle. Appetizers included the Tuna Carpaccio , a small dish that mixes chilled tuna tartar with tobiko caviar and spicy nori salad; and Veggie Terrine which was a lovely mix of spinach, mushrooms and bell peppers. For dinner, we sampled the Ahi Tuna and the King Salmon, which were both very fresh and complemented with sauces made of exotic fruits like passion fruit and papaya. We finished our very tasty meal with a dessert of Tiramisu and Apple Pudding.

Their menu also allows for diners to enjoy the full experience of their menu without going over budget. There are two options, diners can sample a three course dinner for $35 each or a four course dinner for $45 each. Wildflower is a cutting edge restaurant where those who consider themselves to have their finger on the current trends in cuisine go to dine without the pretentious atmosphere that many other restaurants consider chic and the norm. If you're in the mood for dishes that are familiar but with a new twist, then Wildflower should become your favorite new restuarant!

Euzkadi Restaurant

Every once in a while we have to shake up our taste buds and awaken them with lively dishes that remind us that food isn’t just for eating, but enjoyment as well. If you ever find yourself on the lower East side, down by 4th Street, you should definitely stop into Euzkadi at 108 East 4th St between 1st and 2nd Avenues. You’re guaranteed to have an authentic meal in an artistic and intimate setting reminiscent of a European café.

Nestled into a prime location in the cultural lower east side, Euzkadi offers a variety of tapas and entrees that are authentic to the Basque country of Spain, it‘s namesake. Just by stepping through the door, guests are made to feel as if they have already left New York and entered another world, without even needing a passport! Whether you’re a large group or a simple party of two, the staff at Euzkadi treats you as if they’ve been waiting exactly for your party to arrive. Once inside, emphasis is given to the rich history of Spain through the décor. On the ceiling are replicas of actual cave drawings found in Spain. And just incase your geography is a bit rusty, there’s a mirrored map of Spain on their wall…just for reference’s sake!

But the exoticism doesn’t end with the atmosphere. Like it’s name, all of the dishes are straight from the Basque country. We arrived at Euzkadi and in typical form, headed for the bar where we requested two glasses of Sangria. Once seated we were instantly offered a plate of Breads served with an Olive and Anchovy Spread. But before we could make the customary mistake of filling ourselves with bread, we were instantly given an array of tapas to review with a reminder not to overeat!

Our personal favorites were the Bravas or crispy seasoned potatoes, Chorizo al Jerez which is a spicy sausage typical of many Spanish and Basque dishes, and the Fried Goat Cheese with Honey. But other traditional tapas that we tasted included Ham and Cheese Croquetas, Paquetitos de Jamon (ravioli with ham stuffing), Agucate (gratin of avocado and feta cheese with lemon juice, olive oil and sea salt), and an adorable dish made to persuade young children to eat their chorizos, El Niño Rebelde or Chorizos laced with chocolate.

The main entrée was just as flavorful and robust as the tapas. We were treated to a dish of Paella de Mariscos which is meant to be shared. The paella contained every imaginable shell fish such as shrimp with the head attached, calamari, mussels, and scallops. Along with the seasoning, peppers and rice, we practically scraped the skillet clean that it was served in! And just when we thought that we couldn’t possibly eat more, we were treated to a taste of their Flan and Caramelized Apples, two very sweet and sinful dishes.

If you’re seeking a taste of the wild side while still receiving the treatment of a valued guest, Euzkadi definitely has all that you desire. With a wine list reflective of Spain, you won’t be disappointed with their bar. Although they don’t offer a price fixed menu, it’s really not necessary! All of their meals are very reasonably priced and with the allure of a paella for two or three depending on the day, there’s no reason you should pass Euzkadi by. Open for dinner every night, make sure that you stop by after on a Tuesday night or on the weekend after 8pm where the mood turns festive with a flamenco band and live DJ respectively. Regardless of what kind of excitement you seek, Euzkadi is sure to tantalize your senses and remind you of the exoticism of the Basque country of Northern Spain.

For more information about Euzkadi visit www.euzkadirestaurant.com. Or visit them at 108 E. 4th St. between 1st and 2nd Aves.

Spring Street Natural Restaurant

In the mood for something healthy tonight? Not a problem! Reserve a table at Spring Street Natural at 62 Spring Street on the corner of Lafayette and Spring. Since its conception in 1973, Spring Street Natural has prided itself on only using minimally processed foods such as organically harvested vegetables and raised poultry for their exotic menu that is a fusion of textures and flavors. Surprise your taste buds and realize that healthy and tasty are synonymous!

In case you’re not as hip as the rest of us New Yorkers on the healthy eating scene, there are a variety of diets that Spring Street Natural caters to. If you’re like me and aren’t entirely vegetarian, then you can enjoy a meal prepared from free range chicken or organically raised seafood such as Yellowfin Tuna or Boston Cod. If you prefer a completely vegetarian diet, then Spring Street Natural boasts the best tempeh in the city along with tofu and seitan. All foods are freshly prepared and seafood fares are personally overseen by Jorge, the seafood specialist. About the only thing that you won’t find here is red meat, but the food is so delicious that your taste buds won’t have time to miss it!

Not only does Spring Street Natural boast an amazing and innovative twist on healthy living, but their bartending and mixologist staff should be awarded for creating a cocktail list that is an exotic companion to the menus. My dinner guest and I were treated to a Blood Orange-Raspberry Cosmo and a Mango-rita. Seeing as how cosmos are my favorite drink and I always order them at every restaurant or lounge reviewed, I fell in love with their tropical twist on the Cosmo. If you prefer something with a stronger kick, then definitely give the Mango-rita a try.

We were treated to a medley of dishes at Spring Street Natural and appetizers began with a tasting of Salmon Cakes and Beer Battered Poblano Chili Peppers Stuffed with Shitake Mushrooms and Toasted Pine Nuts. The poblano chili had a wonderful variety of textures and flavors that contrasted the spicy flavor of the chili against the smooth texture and taste of the mushrooms.

After the appetizers, we were treated to an intermediary dish of Stir-Fried Organic Vegetables with Organic Tempeh. This dish would be considered a vegan macrobiotic meal which is completely balanced for nutrition. And for those of us who don’t know what Tempeh is, it’s a soybean based meat substitute that tastes quite a bit like chicken. Being a first time tempeh eater, I thought it had a great flavor and a consistency very similar to actual chicken.

Our entrees were actually a seafood presentation consisting of Sesame Crusted Sashimi Rare Yellowfin Tuna Steak and Boston Cod with a Golden Leek Crust. I’ve had sashimi rare tuna steak, but never like this. The flavor of the tuna is contrasted against the wasabi mashed potatoes but what stands out most is the freshness of the fish. Likewise, the cod is accompanied by a passion fruit beurre blanc, that awakens the taste buds and makes you realize that this isn’t your typical “healthy living” restaurant! But just incase we weren’t completely stuffed and out done by everything else, we were treated to a slice of dairy free Carrot Cake. The icing, which was very rich and thick, was actually crafted from tofu!

Have I teased your taste buds enough with my review? You can enjoy Spring Street Natural’s exotic menu every day with the option of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch on the weekends. Breakfast is served Monday through Friday from 9 to 11:30am. Lunch is everyday from 11:30am to 4:30pm followed by dinner which is available from 4:30 to 11:30pm Sunday through Thursday and open an hour later on Fridays and Saturdays. Part of the brunch crowd? No worries, brunch is offered Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30am to 4:30pm.

Obviously, I was extremely impressed by Spring Street Natural. As someone who usually avoids restaurants that boast a truly healthy or nutritious methodology on eating, I loved this restaurant. But beyond the menu, the atmosphere was relaxed enough for a night out with friends, but with just enough of a mood that you could take your special honey or sweetie out for an intimate night out for two. After dining at Spring Street Natural I’m not only a believer in healthy living, but I’m looking forward to returning for more culinary delights!

Gente Ristorante Italiano

What could be better than good food, good company and a great atmosphere? These are all the ingredients necessary for turning Gente Ristorante Italiano into your favorite eatery. Like it’s name, Gente, people and congeniality are this restaurant’s priority. From the minute you step through the door you’re treated as if everyone has known you for years. And this feeling helps to make your dining experience at Gente more complete.

The menu boasts an authentic selection of dishes all personally approved by Gente’s owner, Jay Mitchell. Jay has traveled to Italy over ninety times in his life and each time he returns with a new dish or ingredient to increase the authenticity of his restaurant. The menu is a testament to this as there is a dish that can appeal to even the pickiest of tastes. I was treated to an array of selections including a tasty dish of Farfalle Portofino, (bowtie pasta with a rich pesto tomato sauce) with a sauce so rich that I assumed it contained meat, only to be pleasantly surprised that it was completely vegetarian.

While I dined at Gente I was treated to a meal that boasted the variety and complexity of their menu. Dinner began with a sample of Tuscan Roasted Tomato Soup, a richly thick tomato base seasoned with basil and other spices. Antipasti was then served with a sampler of Mini Margherita Pizzas, Portabella Mushrooms, and Bruschetta with Tomato and Garlic. And after just a taste of the Farfalle Portofino, I was treated to a duo entrée of Talapia in Lemon Sauce and Chicken Marsala followed by Tiramisu for dessert. Everything I ate contained such a variety of flavors and textures that I was actually anticipating the next course before I had finished another. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed dinner at Gente!

Nestled in the prime Grand Central location of East 45th St. between Lexington and 3rd Avenue, Gente’s ambiance is definitely as eye catching as the menu. Along the walls are black and white pictures of celebrities who have visited Cina Cita the Italian Hollywood over the years, including Sofia Loren and Marilyn Monroe. For a moment in time, you’re given the opportunity to step out of the hustle and bustle of New York, and into the familiar atmosphere reminiscent of a side street restaurant in Italy.

Gente is open for lunch and dinner, Monday through Saturday from 11am to 10pm. If you’re part of the lunch crowd, there’s an amazing price fixed menu that offers soup, salad, a choice of entrees and a choice of desserts all for one low price, inquire for details! If you’re not in a hurry and are able to take in the sights and tastes that Gente has to offer, then stop in for a delightful candle lit dinner. Sample from their impressive wine list or, if you prefer mixed drinks like me, prepare to be spoiled by a knowledgeable bartending staff. So, regardless of whether you dine with a large group of friends or an intimate dinner for two, Gente Ristorante Italiano is the perfect place to impress your friends or sweetie with your refined palette for Italian cuisine!
