Creating A More Fashion Forward New York

"The New 'It' Product: E.L.F. Cosmetics"
(The Reason Why Beauty Doesn't Have To Be Expensive)

Every woman knows how frustrating it can be to spend quite a bit of money on make up products that don't live up to the hype. Nothing is more irritating than having the "knowledgable make up specialists" swear to you that this product will make you look amazing only to find that you either can't reproduce the look or the colors are actually hideous for you. But those days are actually behind us with the advent of E.L.F. Cosmetics (Eyes. Lips. Face.). Not only is the concept revolutionary, but the creators are actually knowledgable, and all their items cost just $1 each.

Yup that's right, $1! No, we're not pulling your leg just to see if you run out of the house right now and tear down to your nearest drug store. Since I practically live for make up, it stands to reason that I have my fair share from the highly expensive brands to the more pocket book friendly lines. And I must admit that E.L.F Cosmetics is not only wallet friendly, but can actually compete with the expensive lines.

I have everything from their full brush set to various types of foundations, eye shadows, lipglosses, duo mascara and blush. All of their products apply smoothly for a perfect finish and are infused with SPF to keep your skin healthy from start to finish, which is important because the sun's rays are damaging year round. Another added benefit, E.L.F.'s cosmetic palette is appealing for all skin tones and that puts E.L.F. in a league beyond a number of high priced competitors.

E.L.F. is a great "must have/essential" line whether you're a makeup pro or a beginner. Makeup aficionados will love the fact that the entire line has been approved by Scott Vincent Borba, a make up artist who has worked with such lines as Hard Candy and Shiseido. Novices will enjoy the understated and muted purple and pink eye shadows, making it safe to ease into color without the intimidation of creating the clown effect. Likewise, those same colors, along with the easy to use duo mascara, are appealing to the no frills chicas who want a bit of color and pop without feeling like they have to spend all day in front of a mirror.

An added bonus to the E.L.F. concept is their online beauty specialist, Achelle. Regardless of what occasion your make up need calls for, they have you covered at www.eyeslipsface.com. She also gives helpful tips on understanding your skin tone and type, and what products would be best for you. As if that's not enough, makeup lovers can create their own palettes online and choose between products for the eyes, lips and face.

The E.L.F. website allows you to create various kits by picking out a makeup bag of your choice and filling it with whichever items you desire. Considering the great low price of all their makeup, brushes, and tools, this is a great idea in comparison to the overpriced pre made kits from competitors; which may or may not have the right colors for you. Where should you go to get your fill of E.L.F. Cosmetics? Well, right now they are available in your local drugstores. But just incase you didn't spy them, E.L.F. is always available at www.eyeslipsface.com with a full selection of makeup, tools and makeup cases. So now that you know where to go when you want to look beautiful, what are you waiting for? Go out or online and stock up on all your beauty essentials today!

"Lisa Jubilee: Dietary Nutritionist"
(Assisting in a Healthier Lifestyle for Others)

If you're still worried that you don't know what job will work for you and you're a senior in college or are already in a job but just not satisfied, you are not alone. In fact, instead of looking at it as just a job, you should be thinking in terms of finding a career that can offer long term stimulation as well as financial satisfaction. And here at BAS, we're committed to presenting various careers to you that don't necessarily coincide with the typical 9 to 5 office setting that usually comes to mind when you think of work.

And to highlight our career profiles, we bring you Lisa Jubilee, a body composition specialist who is also a certified dietary nutritionist. Her career gives her the opportunity to actually "give back" to others by helping her clients achieve a healthier standard of living. Together with her clients, they create realistic goals such as establishing a more nutritionally sound diet and offering suggestions to help maintain positive body composition and health.

Lisa's career entails careful monitoring of her client's dietary intake. Although the goal of all of her clients is to attain a more healthy lifestyle, it's important for her to ensure that essential vitamins and nutrients aren't neglected in their efforts. As when I visited her for my metabolic review, she stressed the importance that there is such a thing as necessary fats and body fat.

Each client must fill out an information sheet that lists all (if any) of their illnesses. This must be taken into account when Lisa Jubilee creates a personalized diet for them. In addition, her review of their body composition (i.e.: body fat percentage, and Body Mass Index figures) must be meted out with advice such as how to maintain or lose weight in a safe way.

Just as with the diet, discussing a person's weight must be done with care. The goal of her position is to encourage clients to achieve a healthy balance between diet, exercise and everyday life. Thus, realistic goals and boundaries must be set that ease anxieties while addressing serious problems and avoiding the creation of more stress for her clients.

If the world of nutrition is of interest to you, your current thought might be "How do I start in this profession?" Well, just like any other medical profession, dietary nutritionists require certification and courses in subjects such as anatomy and physiology. After achieving certification, there are a multitude of possibilities for beginning your career.

Lisa Jubilee began her career working as a nutritionist at the David Burton Gym. This is a very common beginning stage for individuals looking to enter the dietary profession. Here, it is possible to create a very strong client base, as your clients will trust your abilities by your association with their gym. This is the very thing that Lisa did, but then decided that she could better assist her clients by offering more personalized service with a private practice.

Regardless of whether you begin at a nutritional center or with a more private practice, there are numerous options available to you. The key is to remember that this a career for someone who has strong attention to detail, and wants to make a difference in the lives of others by improving their patients' health and their value of life. This career gives you the opportunity to touch a multitude of lives and to actively see the improvements that occur. Dedication and the ability to connect with others are a must, in addition to a need for compassion and understanding.

"Hard Candy Cosmetics"
(For Sugar 'N Spice & Everything Nice)

If little girls are made of “sugar and spice and everything nice” then their make up must be Hard Candy! A complete make up line featuring everything from yummy lip glosses and sparkly eye shadows to tinted moisturizers and pressed powders, Hard Candy focuses on creating a superior product while being animal friendly.

Hard Candy initially began in 1995 as a pre med student’s attempt to make the perfect pastel shade of nail polish to match her favorite pair of strappy sandals. After constantly being asked where she got her nail polish, she made up a batch to sell at her local Fred Segal store. It was an instant success, especially after shortly there after, Alicia Silverstone was spotted on the David Letterman Show sporting her new manicure a la silver “Trailer Trash” from Hard Candy. And as they say, the rest was history!

Hard Candy’s products are fool proof and parent proof. Since the majority of their eye shadows and glosses are predominantly sheer or pastel, it reduces the potential for mistakes or angry parents from too deep a shade. Hard Candy’s sparkly eye shadows come in adorable pastel candy shaped slide cases with cute names such as “Jelly Bean” (must have mauve), “Licorice” (dark ‘n delicious), and “Cotton Candy” (baby pink). My favorite is “Licorice”; it’s a true black color that doesn’t fade during the day. Which can also be said for all of their products.

In addition, Hard Candy products can transcend from the classroom, to the boardroom, to cocktails at 6 with the girls after work. One of the new products that I was introduced to from Hard Candy was their Hint Tint oil free tinted moisturizer in “Gingerbread Cookie”. Not only does it go on smooth but blends in perfectly. And as if that’s not enough, you don’t even feel it unlike a lot of moisturizers, which can feel heavy and leave you with that “pancake” feeling.

It works as a great base since it evens out the skin tone for those who are weary of foundation. In addition, Hard Candy offers the corresponding face powders with just a hint of shimmer for you to use as a bronzer. Again, these products are fool proof and you don’t need a degree from a cosmetology school in order to use them!

“But what about my eye liner?!” you might be asking. Don’t worry, Hard Candy also offers an array of eyeliners and just recently rolled out a line of “Super Slim” eye pencils in three metallic shades. The general problem with eye pencils is the drag they create on the skin. With Hard Candy, that problem’s been solved!

These eye pencils glide on easily and the pencil colors is true to the color advertised, and correspond very well to the eye shadows. We tried out “Frigid” (bright blue), “Vibe” (bright purple), and “Sushi” (bright green). The colors are wonderful and look great on any skin tone, which is a must to get the BAS stamp of approval!

And of course, Hard Candy didn’t forget the lips! We were given a massive pot of lip gloss labeled “10 Years of Lip Gloss”, and we could see why. A shimmer lip gloss that tastes great and blends well what girl could ask for more? It looks like a vibrant color but goes on sheer. Of course, if the lip gloss pots are overwhelming, Hard Candy also offers lip gloss lollipops, with color so sheer that you can see through it. My favorite, “Strawberry Kiss”, and it tastes great too!

So, now that your sold on Hard Candy, how do you get your hands on it? Hard Candy is available at Sephora beauty stores across the world. Of course, if there’s not a Sephora conveniently located near you, check out www.hardcandy.com to get your sweet and adorable make up fix and to check out their full line. And as always, don’t say you were the last to know about it!

"Fun in the Sun"
(Put it down now...a look at boho fashion)

I was having an interesting conversation today with some close friends and of course the topic invariably turned to fashion. Somehow, we managed to start up a conversation about the “Boho” trend that began re-sweeping the nation last summer and has somehow managed to latch its claws into fashionistas everywhere for another summer. So, what is Boho, is it a look that is easily carried off by all body types, and how and when should it be attempted?

Well, for starters boho is short for a bohemian flavor that’s been infiltrating into every boutique or chain clothing store since last summer. It consists of all the flowing or “gypsy” inspired garb including long crinkled skirts, caftans, peasant tops, beaded shoes and large slouchy hats and bags. All of these can be great additions to one’s wardrobe, but when do we know that we’ve gone too far? Is it possible that somehow, we managed to allow all of these merchandisers and fashion buyers to fool us into thinking that boho is a style that can be easily recreated by all?

It was a great question, and it got me thinking about a good example of an item that rarely compliments any of the body types I’ve seen it on the cropped tie front jacket. Now, you know that many a chica has attempted to wear this little number to the office, a night out with friends or on a day just lounging around the city. But rarely does it give the desired effect that they think it does. I’ve seen this poor thing brought out of the closet in a multitude of creative ways, but few really compliment the person who decides to wear it.

The worst way to wear it, with nothing under it! I’ve seen this a couple of times and usually it’s definitely while the sun is very high in the sky and the likelihood that they’re coming from a predawn club party is highly unlikely. Besides the fact that it just looks out of place on an average day, it also requires you to have a slightly perfect physique in order to even attempt this twist. Unfortunately I can say that rarely has the person who’s been spotted in it been anything close to a slim waistline.

But besides the obvious fashion victims who just need to be arrested, these jackets have a tendency to make the individual who wears them look as if their body has been disconnected. Usually the bearer of this “jacket” is also wearing it with the bohemian skirt. So, this is what the passerby sees, a skirt that increases the leg line by its sheer length, a tank top or cute top and then a truncated body. Why, because that cute little jacket ties off right below the bust line. So, instead of allowing the body’s natural flow to continue, it cuts it off, making you (the unfortunate wearer) look disembodied. Along with that, it has a tendency to make even the smallest of bust lines look a little garish, as if you’re trying to lasso them into line.

Usually, beyond the jacket, most people have managed over the past year to master the boho look without going too far overboard. Our only other complaint would be to the person who has decided that maybe since they’ve somehow managed not to go overboard with the actual clothing, they can go all out with the jewelry. Need I remind you that nothing says annoying like 100 clanking bracelets on one arm? Sure, it’s great to layer up with about ten or so interesting and THIN bracelets, just to give yourself an interesting edge. But it is not cool to walk around looking like you’ve been attacked by a knight from the 13th century and you managed to walk away relatively unscathed except for that armor that you’re sporting.

Likewise, loading up on every metallic accessory that you could possibly find at your local boutique would also be considered going overboard! You don’t have to wear the strappy gold sandals with the matching golden boho bag, the five or so gold chains, a gold chain belt and of course the thousand and one gold bangles. Moderation is the key here. You want to look like a trendsetter rather than a fashion victim.

Basically, ride the fashion wave without becoming a gigantic wipe out. There’s no reason that you should avoid a trend, but at the same time, you shouldn’t look as if an entire trend movement managed to attack you and all that’s left of you is this over dressed (and might I add poorly dressed) shell of your former self. Keep in mind that trends come and go, don’t overload your closet with non essentials that are probably not going to last through out the season.

So, this leaves the question to be asked, what should I snag from the boho movement? Well, any of the fun flounced and crinkled skirts are a nice addition to add. They come in a variety of lengths and even if boho dies tomorrow, don’t worry it’ll be back in five years or so. Besides, they make great vacation gear. Cute peasant tops are always acceptable, along with the floppy hats and slouchy boho bags. And of course, shoes are always a must! So what are you waiting for, go out there and make the city streets your own personal runway!

Living Proof
The Best in Nutrition & Fitness

This year, my New Year’s resolution was to be more health conscious by not only paying attention to what I ate, but also taking time to make exercise part of my daily routine. Of course, here we are at the end of January and my New Year’s resolution is still on the ground floor! I’ve been a little bit more aware of what and how much of an item I eat. But, about that exercise…let’s just say that I’ve had three free passes to Bally’s and New York Sports Club and all of them have either already expired or are set to expire and I haven’t set foot into any of those facilities.

So, a friend of mine suggested that I go to a nutrition and fitness center to have my diet, metabolism and activity measured, thus creating a personalized plan that I would be more likely to stick to. I figured it couldn’t hurt, so dressed in relatively comfy clothes, I headed over to Living Proof at 226 E. 54th St between 2nd and 3rd avenues, a center that offers a fully integrated nutrition and exercise program that actually caters to the individual.

Toted as the “Un-Gym”, Living Proof examines your daily eating habits. Unlike the average diet which is strictly regimented and makes eating out something to dread, this plan suggests healthy ways that you can still enjoy food but in a different way. On my first visit (which happened to be a Friday), I was instructed that in order to seriously offer me a beneficial program, I needed to write a food journal for a full week of everything I ate. Then, the following Friday, I was to come back to have my metabolism and body fat tested. That meant no food after 9am that morning and a ban on caffeine or exercise that day as well.

The following Friday, I returned to Living Proof and was met by body composition specialist, Lisa Jubilee, MS, CDN. Our meeting started with the standard informational survey where I filled out my weight, height, age, if I had any medical conditions, etc. Once I finished this, I was weighed for accuracy and then had my body fat tested on my hip, triceps, bicep, and on my back. The result? I have a body fat percentage of 22.1%, which for my weight and age group (114lbs age 20-25…I’m 23) is an excellent number. In other words, only 22.1% of my body’s weight is comprised of fat.

And I learned something very interesting, there’s no such thing as someone having no body fat. Yes, even in our body image obsessed culture, no one out there can live without some measure of body fat. So what happened to the other 77.9% of my body weight? That number represents my body weight including organs, bone, and muscle mass. I was happy to learn that I had a pretty good body fat percentage considering that I’m not the healthiest eater in town and I’ve had my fair share of late night bacon cheeseburgers with a side of fries!

But my visit wasn’t over. I had also agreed to have my metabolism tested. All I had to do was take a breathing test by breathing in and out normally through my mouth into a tube while my nose was clamped. Ten minutes later I had my results. Again, a pleasant surprise: my resting metabolic rate was 1627 calories a day. My results ranked in the maintenance zone category of 1627 to 2113 calories which is a target for those who have reached their ideal weight.

My goal from this is to maintain my metabolism and weight by eating right and incorporating exercise into my daily routine. But, had my results been less than ideal, I would have been given a personalized meal plan that would take into account my daily routine (work, school, etc) and highlighted ways that I could cut calories or increase fiber without sacrificing time or flavor.

Now that I have information about how my body processes foods and burns calories, I’m ready to find a fitness plan that actually works for me. Thankfully, Living Proof also has Jon Rothchild, a certified personal trainer who will show me a low impact routine that won’t take more than thirty minutes but will help me maintain my body weight. So, stay tuned next week as I outline his guaranteed exercise plain to help me maintain and stay fit!

If you would like to have your nutrition and exercise lifestyle evaluated, contact Living Proof by phone at (212) 308-2990 or visit them at 226 E 54th St, Ste 501.

Up Next This Season on Big Apple Style...

It might be chilly or spring like outside, but you can always use a change of scenery! Whether you're going to some distant beachy locale or just taking a trip to see some of the hot spots in your own neck of the woods, we'll make sure that you know about it. For the rest of this season, BAS' focus will be to bring you the best ideas for vacation get aways. From casinos in Jersey, breweries in upstate New York to tropical islands off the southern coast of the US, we'll highlight the best places and the best bang for your buck!

"Seavite"
(The Hottest Import This Year)

Anyone from the age of puberty on knows how stressful achieving perfect skin can be. It’s either dry, oily, or splotchy. Even those with relatively healthy and easy to maintain skin can still suffer from flare-ups. But regardless of whether your skin is healthy or problematic, one thing that many of us have in common is that we tend to spend quite a bit of money in order to find that magical elixur which normally falls very short of it’s claims. Now, there’s a new product with 100% natural ingredients from Ireland, that not only makes strong claims but actually delivers as well!

Seavite isn’t your typical skincare corporation that starts in the laboratory, goes to the boardroom and finishes with an expensive marketing campaign to convince the public that their product is superior. Seavite is a family owned and operated company, spearheaded by husband and wife team Kaye and Patrick Mulrooney. Patrick was a doctor who researched the healing and regenerative powers of seaweed.

At the time Kaye’s daughters, Jane and Katherine, both suffered from excema, a very drying and irritating skin condition. Doctors suggested “sea, sun and sand” which was excellent during their summer months at the shore. Kaye realized that if she could find a way to recreate the beneficial effects of the sea baths when her children weren’t able to go to the beach, she might have found a perfect skin care formula.

From this, Seavite was formed in 1992. Although Patrick Mulrooney passed away, his daughters later went on to become doctors who continued researching the beneficial nature of seaweed as a nutrient for skin. Now, Seavite offers a full line of skincare products ranging from exfoliating body scrubs to hydrating facial moisturizers for both day and night. All of the Seavite line contains “products rich in health promoting vitamins, amino acids and minerals”. Seavite products also “contain complex polysaccharides which moisturize and condition the skin and pamper the body.

All of their products boast a list of 100% all natural ingredients harvested in the untouched waters off the West Coast of Ireland. Seavite is also hypoallergenic, contains no animal by products and is not tested on animals. But, the true test of a product isn’t always about production but its ability to deliver a useful product to the consumer. As a dedicated user of Seavite for over a year, I am convinced that Seavite is one of the best skincare lines available on the market today.

Before I started using this line, I suffered from ecxema, dry skin and an uneven complexion. After a friend offered to bring me some of the Seavite line, the Exfoliating and Toning Shower Gel, Deep Cleansing Purifying Seaweed Face Mask and the Moisturizing and Replenishing Complex Face Cream from Ireland. Within a week of using just these products, I could see an instant change in my skin’s texture, tone, and moisture levels.

The facial cream had a non greasy texture that was light enough so that it wouldn’t clog my pores but was heavy enough to last throughout the day. I no longer suffered from dry patches in my face, which was something I had experienced my whole life. The shower gel contained scrubbing beads that actually did slough off dead skin and evened out my complexion as well as minimizing my acne flare ups on my arms and legs. I could actually tell that my skin was becoming healthier the more that I used it! And that wonderful glow that I always write about to our readers…I was actually starting to see my skin have a healthy shine which normally can only be found in a bottle.

I would highly recommend this product for anyone who wants healthy skin without overloading on unhealthy chemicals which can change your skin’s texture or composition. But I especially suggest Seavite for anyone like me who has struggled to achieve healthy skin but has spent a lifetime of frustration and money on products that do little more than hydrate skin for an hour or are too harsh for our delicate skin.

So, if you’re tired of spending your money on products that either don’t deliver or are too harsh for your skin, it’s time to experience for yourself the regenerative and nourishing powers of Seavite. Currently, in the United States, Seavite is only available through their online store at www.seavite.ie. But, Seavite is slated to begin distribution in the US later this year.

“Fun in the Sun”
(How to dress summer savvy in the office)

Temperatures are soaring and that warm if not hot summer breeze is whipping through the city letting us know that summer is officially here. And we’re very happy for that because it means that bright colors (although popular this past fall) are officially welcome as well as short hemlines and lightweight fabrics. But with the summer sun and fun come some other hair raising questions…how to wear the right outfit for the right time. Obviously (or hopefully it’s obvious) the same thing you wear to the beach isn’t the same outfit that you wear to the office. If you’re a little bit confused about what to wear for the right occasion…don’t worry, Big Apple Style is here to aid you through the confusion.

Let’s start with hemlines…some things never change. The old rule from school still applies to the office. If it falls shorter than your middle finger, it is definitely not work room appropriate. In the office you want to be taken seriously, and if someone is distracted by short hemlines, then you’ve lost your focus…and potentially your credibility. This is especially important to those new to the work force. What worked in the college lecture halls will not fly in the office…give yourself a fighting chance!

Also, depending on your office setting, it’s always good to start with a core set, and then “add on”. No one should be without a pantsuit or skirt set. It creates a more polished image, even if your jacket stays at your desk all day, you’ll look heads and tails above the person who comes in looking like mismatch. And along this line, the office is not a fashion show, so you take less of a risk of looking more flighty than serious by anchoring your outfit with a classic pair of pants or skirt. Of course, some of these rules can be relaxed depending on the setting of your office or the field you’re in. Someone who works in a corporate setting has no right to walk in with a bohemian skirt, or a caftan top. Whereas, someone who works in a creative industry with a relaxed office setting might be able to get away with the boho look.

And now that the basics are out of the way, let’s talk specifics! Since you’re pants and jacket have been decided for you, we’ve limited your outfit meltdown by giving you the option of what top, shoes and accessories to wear. Play with color, more than likely your suit is a toned down color, and if you go with black, then the color palette is your playground for the top. As far as weights go, anything is an option…the flimsy lingerie tops from the winter are still just as hot, but do wear them in moderation. If it could actually double in your bedroom as a hot number for your hottie…don’t bring it to the office. Likewise, leave the cut out, one shoulder smoldering tops for the club. It’s not the least bit impressive and it looks ridiculous in the office.

***Try to steer clear of anything that makes you look too relaxed. This includes tops that indulge in ruffles, long flowing sleeves ***

We only have one request…don’t over accessorize! If you’ve decided to wear a shocking turquoise top, you don’t necessarily have to tote the matching bag, shoes, and jewelry. Buy some core pieces for jewelry that can actually transcend through a few different colors. There are tons of hot places in the city where you can actually buy everything you need to create your own jewelry. Try some beautiful taupe colored shells or jade pieces which tend to blend in well regardless of the color you’re wearing. Pick up some odd shaped pieces so that you stand out in a creative way that says “I’m trendy but I can still focus on the job at hand”.

As for shoes, nothing says “smart hottie” better than a pair of classic black stilettos with a twist. Keeping the pants rule in mind (length of the pants should hit just the top of your foot) find some cute shoes that reflect your own style but still respect your industry. Crazy colors are really cool when you’re out with your friends, but can sometimes be a detractor if you’re in a strict office environment. Of course, the more relaxed your environment, go shoe crazy because it really won’t matter and may actually assist you in credibility.
